The Tata car Nano is a low-cost segment A developed by the Indian manufacturer Tata Motors. It was officially presented at the Salon de l’Automobile in New Delhi in 2008 and will be put up for sale in the middle of this year.
The selling price without taxes to the level of basic equipment will be approximately 100,000 Indian rupees (about U.S. $ 2,500 or € 1700). As a “hundred thousand” were translated into Hindi language as “lakh” This car has been named by the media as “the car of lakh” ( “the 1-lakh car” in English). The furnished versions will have more elements of comfort such as air conditioning and electric windows. It is planned to produce 200,000 units per year.

Low Price
The factor most striking about this model is its cost, extremely low. This is because:
* There are no elements of comfort, power steering, folding mirrors, air conditioning, radio or electric windows.
* Lack of security systems, ABS or airbags; elements almost mandatory in the European Union.
* Presence of a large quantity of plastic instead of metal plates.
* Unions chassis welded rather than riveted.
* Low cost of labour in India.
History
The project to create a car of 1 lakh rupees began in 2003, under the mandate of Tata Motors and its owner, Ratan Tata. The strategy under the project was to provide the population india, saturated with two-wheeled vehicles, a car; based on the success of the brand in the production of the truck Ace in May 2005.
Industrialists were convinced that a reliable car could not be so inexpensive to manufacture, so the media speculated the possibility that it was a four-wheeled rickshaw. Both Times of India Ratan Tata as it refused. The rotary wrote that a car is properly designed, the company president said: “There is a car with cortinillas plastic or homeless, a car really is.”
During development, the company reinvented and minimized the manufacturing process, was an innovative design, and called on manufacturers of components to find work already made to produce simple and logical solutions.
The car was designed in Italy by I.DE.A. Institute, with Ratan Tata directing and ordering process changes, such as reducing the number of windshield wipers of two to one.
Inside the Nano is 21% larger and an external 8% smaller than that of his nearest rival, the Maruti 800. Will be presented with up to three different levels of equipment. The most luxurious equipped air conditioning but no power steering. Se cree que se produce en la planta de singur in West Bengal, still under construction. The company expects to produce 250,000 units per year.
Rear Engine
Using a rear engine to maximize interior space makes the Nano a car similar to the original Fiat 500, another “people’s car” very innovative, technically speaking. A concept car very similar in design to Nano, also with rear engine, was introduced by the British company Rover Group in 1990 to succeed the original Mini, but it was not brought to the assembly line. [3] The now non-existent Rover Group based its City Rover later in the Tata Indica, while the “new Mini” became larger and more conservative technically, manufactured by BMW MINI.
